Care For Braces Using These Tips

care for bracesSo you finally got braces and now you want to learn how to take care of them. You will find that taking care of your teeth will be more difficult once you get braces. If you are wearing braces whether they are metal braces, ceramic braces or lingual braces, you should take the time to learn how to take care of braces and all the important aspects of Braces care. If you take good care of your braces, they will be much more comfortable and effective, meaning you’re a step closer to the perfect smile each day! Don’t worry, caring for your braces is not difficult as many people think.

Here, at Orthodontic Experts of Colorado, we believe that taking care of braces not only helps prevent damage to the braces themselves and the teeth underneath but it also makes the braces more comfortable to wear. Knowing some braces care tips and the basics of orthodontic treatment will help you follow your orthodontist’s recommendations to keep your teeth and gums healthy during the time you’re wearing braces.

Perfect Your Brushing Technique

To maintain good oral hygiene, brushing is important. However, it becomes even more important when you’re wearing braces. This is because braces have tiny spaces to trap food. This trapped food causes plaque. This can lead to many other oral problems. You can use a soft head toothbrush to access those hard-to-reach areas. If you want to use an electric toothbrush, that’s fine too.

Braces Care

For Healthy teeth and for the purpose of braces care, hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle towards your gums and start off by brushing at the gum line of your teeth. Once your gum line is cleaned, hold your toothbrush at an upward angle to clean the bottom of your brackets and then at a downward angle on the top of your brackets to clean the upper part of your teeth. Brushing your teeth twice a day is enough in normal condition. However, when you wear braces we would recommend brushing after every meal. For your teeth and Braces care, it’s better to keep a toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste handy in your bag to make sure your mouth is clean and sparkling!

Floss, Floss, Floss!

Flossing can be a bit of a feat while wearing braces, but it’s an important step in your oral hygiene routine that shouldn’t be ignored. Proper flossing helps to remove any plaque build-up and smaller food particles that are stuck in your braces or between your teeth. For braces care and your oral hygiene, you must floss on time. If you find it difficult to floss with flossing tape, try using floss threaders for braces or interdental brushes. Remember to be gentle and take care of braces when you’re flossing. Avoid applying too much pressure or go too quickly as you could damage your braces, which would mean a trip back to see your orthodontist in Colorado!

Avoid Certain Foods

Very few foods are actually off-limits when you wear braces. When you visit Orthodontic Experts of Colorado, your orthodontist will give you a list of foods you should avoid while undergoing treatment. Anything chewy, crunchy, sticky or hard is likely to be on that list.

Additionally, if you’re the kind of person who’s always nibbling on your nails or chewing pen lids, you’ll need to give up that habit pretty quickly too because these types of habits and foods can break or bend the braces which are never a good thing.

For your Braces Care, you should also avoid sugary foods and drinks as these can cause staining and decay around your brackets. These stains on your teeth can be permanent and will become more obvious later when the braces are removed, which will not help you to achieve the perfect smile.

Braces Care Kit

For good braces care you need to have a “braces care kit” that would include everything that you need for taking care of Braces. This Kit should be assembled to cater for all essential orthodontic needs. Orthodontic V-Brush, Dental Mirror, Toothpaste, Ortho Wax and Disclosing Tablets must be the part of your braces care kit.

If you are undergoing orthodontic treatment, you’ll want to do anything possible to make sure you’re going to get the best result. Keeping your teeth clean, taking the time to floss, and thinking about the food you eat are simple but effective steps to make sure you’ll have a perfect smile when the braces come off!
