Whether you’re looking to fix a bite issue or you are seeking straighter teeth, getting and maintaining braces can be a nerve-wracking experience. Understanding exactly how the braces process works, and what to expect along the way, can help calm some of those pre-braces butterflies for you—or your child—before the big day. If you’re thinking about getting braces for yourself or for your child, the first thing you need to know is that you can visit Orthodontic Experts of Colorado, where free initial consultations are available that helps you get a sense of how your treatment is going to be.

Following is an overview of process of getting braces generally works, from getting pre-braces molds all the way to the adjustment and maintenance phase.

Step 1: Free Initial Consultation

The American Association of Orthodontics recommends children should visit an orthodontist at age 7. This age may sound too young to those of us who remember braces when we were in our teens, but orthodontic treatment has come a long way and things have really changed since then. Our experienced Colorado orthodontist can detect subtle issues in tooth and jaw development even while baby teeth are still present.

We offer free of cost orthodontic consultations to keep an eye on your child’s smile until you begin orthodontic treatment with us. These brief checkups, while your child is young, will help us care for you effectively, and plan for orthodontic treatment before issues arise. Also, any patient at any age is always welcome to schedule a complimentary orthodontic consultation at Orthodontic Experts of Colorado. We love to meet with you and discuss what’s possible to get your beautiful smile. Once you decide to get started with Orthodontic Experts of Colorado, your process of getting braces will follow these general steps.

Step 2: Your Orthodontist Helps You Get Started with a Thorough Exam

Once you’re ready to pursue orthodontic treatment, at your first visit, our orthodontists will complete a thorough examination to determine your needs. This takes about an hour to evaluate your needs and answer your questions. We may take a special orthodontic x-ray and some photographs to help figure out which orthodontic treatment is best for you.

Your Colorado orthodontist will be able to provide you with an approximate cost of the treatment, will give you an estimated timeline for how long it will take, and will provide options for completing treatment. Your treatment coordinator will then, take records including additional X-rays, schedule the series of appointments necessary to get you started and discuss convenient options for financing your treatment.

Step 3: We Will Explain Recommended Treatment Options

At your initial examination and consultation, your treatment coordinator will examine all of your orthodontic records and show you some examples of braces, Invisalign aligners, and any appliances that may be involved in your treatment. Once you make your decision to move forward with treatment, your appointment to get your braces on can usually be scheduled within a few days of your consultation appointment.

Step 4: Adjustment Visits

Throughout your treatment, we will schedule routine checkups, that are super quick appointments to adjust your brackets, answer questions and help check progress. These appointments typically take about 15-20 minutes and take place every 6-8 weeks throughout your treatment depending on your needs.

Step 5: Your Orthodontist will Get Your Braces Off and Start with Retainers

You may have been anticipating the end of your Orthodontic Treatment during the last few visits, and now your Colorado orthodontist has said that it is time to get your braces off. Orthodontic Experts of Colorado will schedule you for the next available appointment, called a “debonding” appointment.

Removing your braces will not take very long and you will be pleased at how easy and comfortable the process of getting braces is. You will have a set of retainers to hold your teeth in position. Orthodontic Experts of Colorado will decide which retainer is best for you and will prescribe a protocol for wearing your retainers.
