When you visit orthodontic Experts of Colorado and begin your orthodontic journey with Invisalign, our orthodontist will provide you with a series of clear aligners that will guide your teeth to perfection. Achieving the perfect smile isn’t as easy as popping in these aligners. Proper Invisalign care is paramount in order to obtain the best results and avoid costly replacement of Invisalign aligners.

Invisalign Care

One of the biggest advantages of Invisalign aligners is having the ability to take them out to eat and drink, but that doesn’t mean Invisalign care is not required. Keeping your aligners clean is an important part of your orthodontic treatment, and it’s the only way to keep them invisible, odorless, and free from germs. Without conscientious Invisalign care and cleaning, your aligners can discolor, smell, and build up plaque and bacteria that can erode at the enamel of your teeth.
Luckily Invisalign care is easy. You can just follow these simple Do’s and Don’ts when wearing Invisalign to keep them clean.

DO’s for Invisalign Care

Rinse Every Time: When you take your aligners out of your mouth, rinse them every time thoroughly under running water. This will rinse away bacteria, saliva, and food particles.

Soak Regularly: To keep you clear aligners clean, Invisalign offers specialized cleaning crystals to soak your aligners in regularly. Soak your Invisalign aligners in that cleaning crystal to keep them clean.

Clean Your Teeth: Only Invisalign care is not enough – your teeth need to be clean, too! make sure to brush and floss your teeth regularly to prevent buildup of plaque and bacteria under your Invisalign aligners.

Brush Carefully: usually patients want to brush their aligners every time they take them out or put them back in – but you need to be careful, as overzealous brushing can leave visible marks and scratches.

DON’Ts for Invisalign Care

Eat or Drink: Foods and colored drinks can stain your Invisalign aligners and leave an unpleasant smell, so drink only water when you are wearing them.

Use Toothpaste: Toothpaste is great for your teeth but not for your aligners. Toothpaste may harm your aligners so when you brush them, do so gently and without paste.

How to clean stained Invisalign

Those patients who don’t follow Invisalign care instructions get aligners stained. Many of our patients at orthodontic experts of Colorado ask us how to clean stained Invisalign. Your Invisalign aligners get stained if you drink a lot of coffee or tea or if you don’t clean them properly every day. If you have stained your aligners and want to clean them, try the following methods:

  • Fill a small bowl with half warm water and half hydrogen peroxide. Soak your Invisalign for a couple of hours or overnight if they’re “cloudy” to make them clear again
  • Lightly brush the trays with a toothbrush dipped in baking soda to remove stains and any buildup
  • Soak your trays in a half water/vinegar solution for about 30 minutes

Traveling with Invisalign

Removability of Invisalign aligners make them hugely convenient, but it can also cause problems – particularly when traveling. It’s all too easy to misplace them, break them, or even leave them in another country when traveling. If you’ll be traveling with your Invisalign aligners, here are some helpful tips for Invisalign care on the go:

Keep a Supply:

It is better to carry at least three pairs of Invisalign aligners with you when you travel – your current set, your previous and the next set. If you’ll be out of town for more than a few weeks, our orthodontist Colorado recommends taking more.

Extra Case:

At orthodontic experts of Colorado, we have found that it’s easy to lose a case, so we always recommend bringing a backup just in case.

Rinse When Necessary:

It’s best to brush your aligners every time you take them out or put them back in but at a restaurant in another country, this may not be practical. At least you should rinse out your mouth and Invisalign aligners before putting them back in, then brush once you are back in your room.
